Portable SSH terminal for Windows: a practical setup guide

Portable means the application runs from a folder instead of requiring a conventional installer. It simplifies getting started, but it does not remove network requirements or the need to look after your workspace data.

Prepare the folder

Extract the NexusTerm package into a folder you can write to. Use 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Keep the application files together rather than moving only the executable. On a managed PC, application execution still follows the organisation’s policies.

Prepare the SSH connection

You need a hostname or IP address, SSH port, username and an approved authentication method. SSH commonly uses port 22, but your server may use another port. Validate the server host key through a trusted source when connecting for the first time.

Separate a proxy from SSH permissions

A web proxy that allows HTTPS does not necessarily permit SSH tunnelling to port 22. Configure the HTTP proxy or PAC file and the intended bypass list in NexusTerm. If the proxy denies CONNECT, the proxy policy must be checked; replacing the client does not itself grant access.

Protect your portable workspace

The folder contains more than an executable. Treat saved workspace data and backups as confidential, even when credentials are encrypted. Close the program before backing up its data and store backups separately from the working copy.

Know what works offline

License verification works offline after manual activation. The license is associated with one PC and one Windows user; copying the folder to another machine is not a license transfer. SSH and SFTP need network access, and optional AI assistance needs access to the service you configure. No AI model is bundled.
